See. Hear. Feel. Grow.

Design Homily. Donut Sunday. Design Praise.

Growing up, Sunday was a grounding day — with back-to-back Sunday school and mass — followed by family lunch. We would start with going to the early mass as a family (mom, dad, me and sister). Then we would go to Sunday school, where my mom, dad, sister — and eventually me — taught. From first grade to 8th grade, I attended class an hour a week. From 9th to graduating high school, I taught a class. So start to finish, about 4 hours. It was my favorite part of the week.

Part of that is because Sunday gave me “friends outside of work.” A community of my own, where people believed in / hoped for the same things. This made it possible for me to become friends with kids from schools that would feed into my next school. These kids were all pretty different from me, but I had deeper relationships with these friends I made from church than I did with my regular school Mon-Fri friends.

Unbeknown to tater-tot-Fran, this giant chunk of weekend time was probably my favorite part of the week, because regardless of the activity, it was a safe space where I could grow. There were friends. There were teachers. There was reflection. During mass, the homily always seemed to apply to what was going on in my life, and in my teens, it became a weekly challenge to think about something in a way I might not have before.

I hope SundayS.Cool will provide that kind of extracurricular community to everyone who wants to join, listen, contribute. I hope it gives designers a new place and time to look forward to each week.
